3. Historical Topography: From Pyrgos to Burgazada
Navigating Burgazada today follows topographical features delineated centuries ago. In Byzantine nautical charts (*portolans*), the island is consistently labeled *Antigoni*, named in the 3rd century BC after Antigonus I Monophthalmus, general of Alexander the Great. Medieval Italian navigators from Genoa and Venice referred to it as *Isola della Torre* (Island of the Tower) or *Porto Antigoni*, noting the prominent stone signal tower crowning the summit of Bayraktepe.
When Ottoman cartographers mapped the Sea of Marmara under Sultan Mehmed II and later under grand admiral Piri Reis in the 16th-century *Kitab-ı Bahriye* (Book of Navigation), the Greek term *Pyrgos* was phoneticized into *Burgaz*. The island's single mountain mass (170m elevation) created natural microclimates: a sheltered eastern slope where the village and harbor thrived, protected from open Marmara gales, and a wild western cliff face where only counterfeiters and hermit monks dared to dwell.
